Antique French Herbarium Specimen No. 220
The French Herbarium Collection
A remarkable original French herbarium specimen documenting Rosa stylosa Desv., carefully preserved as part of the renowned Herbarium Rosarum compiled by Dr. Pons & Abbé Coste.
This specimen was collected along a country roadside in Reignac, Lot-et-Garonne, France, on 4 June 1895 by botanist Ch. Duffour. It was later catalogued in the 4th edition (1897) of Herbarium Rosarum, an important botanical reference documenting wild rose species throughout France.
Hand-pressed and mounted over 130 years ago, the specimen preserves the elegant stems, leaves, and rose hips of this wild rose while retaining its original printed identification label—a beautiful marriage of scientific history and decorative art.
Today these antique herbarium sheets are treasured by collectors, designers, and lovers of natural history for their quiet beauty and historical significance. Whether displayed individually or alongside others from The French Herbarium Collection, they bring an unmistakable sense of heritage to a thoughtfully collected home.
