Vintage 7" Solar Pinking Shears

Vintage 7" Solar Pinking Shears

A charming and useful piece of sewing history, these vintage 7-inch pinking shears are stamped "SOLAR FOREIGN," marking both the maker's name and their life as an imported tool. Their distinctive zigzag blades were designed to cut fabric with a serrated edge, a clever way to keep seams and raw edges from fraying.

Solid, practical, and full of vintage character, they're as appealing to sewists who still reach for pinking shears as they are to collectors of old tools and haberdashery. Their simple, sturdy form has a quiet, workmanlike beauty that feels right at home in a sewing room or studio.

Condition
Good vintage condition, consistent with age and use. The steel may show light patina, minor surface marks, or gentle wear expected of a tool of this age. These characteristics contribute to the authenticity and character of the piece and do not detract from their beauty or function. Please review all photographs carefully, as they form part of the description.

Collected Notes
Pinking shears were first patented in the late nineteenth century and became a staple of home sewing and dressmaking in the twentieth, valued for finishing edges quickly without hemming. Japan produced a great many sewing tools for export during the twentieth century, and the word "Foreign" stamped on goods typically marked items imported into Britain, where labeling rules required them to show they were made abroad. These small markings now offer collectors a clue to a piece's journey, from a Japanese workshop to a British sewing room.

Why We Collected It
We were drawn to the "SOLAR FOREIGN" stamp, a small detail that tells the story of shears made in Japan and sent abroad to be used. Pairing that history with a genuinely useful tool made them an easy choice, and they make a lovely companion to our other vintage sewing pieces.

Tisbury House Styling Notes
Keep these shears in a sewing basket or craft room with spools of thread, vintage tape measures, and linen. They also make a thoughtful gift for anyone who sews, and look lovely displayed with other vintage scissors and tools in a tray or tin for a collected studio or desk vignette.
