A striking piece of English equestrian history, this antique cast iron hitching post top takes the form of a finely modeled horse head, complete with its original iron ring. Once mounted atop a post outside a home, inn, or shop, it gave riders and carriage drivers a place to tie their horses, and it still carries the sturdy presence of a working piece built to last.

Solid and satisfyingly heavy, the horse head has developed a strong, rich patina over more than a century outdoors and in use. The ring and mounting screw both remain intact, making this a complete and characterful survivor from the days of horse-drawn travel.

Before the motorcar, hitching posts lined streets and drives throughout England, giving horses a secure place to wait while their riders went about their business. As horses gave way to automobiles in the early twentieth century, many posts were removed, and surviving tops with their rings intact are now prized by collectors.
