Antique Victorian Brass Maid's Bell on Coiled Spring
Antique Victorian Brass Maid's Bell on Coiled Spring
A wonderful piece of English country house history, this antique maid's bell, often called a maid's bell, once hung in the maids' quarters of a grand home, ready to summon staff to the drawing room, dining room, or bedrooms upstairs. It features a warm brass bell suspended from a dramatic coiled iron spring, with a cast brass rosette mount at its center and the original iron mounting bracket and lever.
The brass has mellowed to a soft golden patina, while the dark iron spring sweeps in graceful curves, giving the bell a sculptural presence that's striking whether hung on a wall or displayed on a shelf. Give it a nudge and it still rings and sways just as it would have more than a century ago.
Country of Origin: Northern England
Estimated Date: Late 19th to early 20th century
Material: Brass bell and rosette mount, coiled iron spring, iron mounting bracket
Dimensions: 9 ½" H x 5 ¾" W x 3" Deep
Condition
Good antique condition, consistent with age and use. The brass shows a warm, mellow patina with minor surface marks and gentle wear, and the iron spring and bracket show age-appropriate oxidation and wear to the finish. These characteristics contribute to the authenticity and character of the piece and do not detract from its beauty or function. Please review all photographs carefully, as they form part of the description.
Collected Notes
In Victorian and Edwardian homes, maids were summoned by a system of bell pulls in each room, connected by wires running through the walls to a row of sprung bells in the kitchen or maids' hall. The coiled spring kept each bell swinging for a few moments after it rang, so staff could see at a glance which room was calling. As homes modernized with electric bells and fewer staff, many of these systems were removed, and surviving bells are now treasured by collectors of English country house antiques.
Why We Collected It
We were captivated by the elegant sweep of the coiled spring and the lovely contrast of dark iron and golden brass. It's a piece that tells such a vivid story of life "upstairs, downstairs," and it still has the satisfying ring that once echoed through a busy English household.
Tisbury House Styling Notes
Mount this bell beside a front or garden door as a charming doorbell, or hang it in a kitchen, mudroom, or back hall as a nod to its original home. It also makes a striking sculptural accent on a bookshelf, mantel, or console, and would be wonderful for calling everyone to dinner. Pair it with brass, leather, and other English country pieces for a collected, historic feel.
