Antique Victorian Housemaid's Linen Cupboard with Working Key
Antique Victorian Housemaid's Linen Cupboard with Working Key
A beautifully proportioned English Victorian housemaid's cupboard, crafted from solid pine during the late nineteenth century. Originally found in the service quarters of large English country homes and manor houses, these were incredibly practical pieces designed to store household linens, blankets, clothing, and other daily necessities.
Behind the two paneled doors are two substantial fixed shelves, offering generous storage for linens, quilts, serving pieces, or decorative collections. Below, nine spacious hand-dovetailed drawers glide smoothly and retain their original turned pine knobs, showcasing the honest craftsmanship of Victorian cabinetmakers.
One of this cupboard's most delightful discoveries came during its journey to us. While preparing it after its arrival from England, we found the original key tucked beneath one of the lower drawers, where it had likely rested unnoticed for decades. Even more remarkably, the key still operates the original lock, allowing the upper cabinet to secure exactly as it was intended over a century ago.
Constructed in three sections--the lower chest of drawers, the upper cupboard, and the removable crown molding--this impressive piece is surprisingly manageable to move and install, making it well suited for today's homes.
