Vintage Welsh Hand-Chiseled Stone Trough

Vintage Welsh Hand-Chiseled Stone Trough

A beautiful and substantial piece of Welsh rural history, this large rectangular trough was hand-chiseled from solid stone. Its generous size and simple, sturdy form speak to a working past on a farm or homestead, where troughs like this held water or feed for livestock and stood up to years of weather and daily use.

The surface still shows the marks of the mason's chisel, giving the trough a wonderfully textured, handmade quality that no machine-cut piece can match. Weathered by time and the elements, it has developed a soft, natural patina that makes it as beautiful as it is enduring.

Collected Notes
Stone troughs were once a fixture of farmyards and village lanes across Wales, carved by hand from local stone to water horses, cattle, and sheep. Built to last for generations, many remained in use long after they were made, and today they're treasured by gardeners and collectors alike. Hand-chiseled examples, with their visible tool marks and naturally weathered surfaces, are especially prized for their character and craftsmanship.

Why We Collected It
We were drawn to this trough for its scale, its simple rectangular form, and the visible chisel marks that tell the story of the hands that shaped it. It's a piece with real presence and history, the kind that instantly makes a garden or entry feel rooted and timeless.
