A matched pair of substantial cast iron garden urns in the classic campana, or bell, form, each raised on its own square pedestal base--a design rooted in nineteenth-century English and European garden tradition. Every urn features a fluted, gadrooned body with a scalloped rim, while the pedestals are decorated on each face with a raised floral swag and ribbon motif flanked by scrolling finials, all cast in fine relief.

Decades of outdoor exposure have given both pieces a deep, rich rust patina throughout, with darker oxidation pooling in the recesses of the relief work--the kind of aged surface that cannot be replicated and is highly sought after by collectors of antique garden ornament. Sold as a pair, they make a striking matched statement flanking an entryway, staircase, or garden path, and function equally well as working planters; shown here filled with lush ferns.

Collected Notes
Cast iron garden ornament reached the height of its popularity in the nineteenth century, when campana-form urns became a staple of English and European estate gardens. Cast in two parts--urn and pedestal--and finished with decorative relief work, these pieces were built for permanence outdoors. Unlike reproduction iron, genuine antique examples develop a deep, uneven rust patina that can only occur through decades of true weather exposure, making each piece entirely unique.
