Vintage Persian Hamadan Rug | Herati Pattern | Hand-Knotted Wool
A characterful vintage Persian rug, hand-knotted in the Hamadan region of northwest Iran, one of the oldest and most prolific rug-weaving districts in the country. This piece features the classic Herati, or "fish," pattern: an allover lattice of diamonds, rosettes, and curling serrated leaves, densely repeated across a red field. The design is framed by a bold navy zigzag guard border and a wide ivory main border patterned with small geometric motifs, finished with a final dark indigo outer band.
Woven on a cotton foundation with a hand-knotted wool pile, this rug has the sturdy, durable construction Hamadan weavings are known for, the kind that only gets better with decades of use. The soft, faded rose and clay tones, along with the naturally worn pile, give it that sought-after lived-in, collected-over-time look that's hard to fake.
Country of Origin: Hamadan region, Iran
Estimated Date: Vintage, estimated mid-20th century based on weave and wear characteristics (exact provenance and age undocumented)
Material: Hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation
Dimensions: 5' × 6' (approximate)
Condition
Good genuine vintage condition, with honest signs of age and use throughout. Two stains are visible on the front side of the rug, and overall wear is consistent with age, with the pile lower in some areas. The fringe is worn and uneven on both ends, with minor loss, and the colors have naturally softened and faded from age and light exposure. All flaws are photographed in detail so buyers know exactly what to expect, and these characteristics are part of what makes a vintage rug genuinely vintage. Please review all photographs carefully, as they form part of the description; additional photos of the stains or any area can be provided on request before purchasing.
Collected Notes
Hamadan is among the most prolific rug-weaving regions in Iran, historically producing sturdy, durable pieces using a cotton foundation and hand-knotted wool pile. The Herati pattern seen here, with its repeating diamond-and-leaf motif, is one of the most enduring designs in Persian weaving, and vintage examples like this one carry a naturally faded, softened palette that only decades of use and light exposure can create.
Why We Collected It
We were drawn to this rug for its rich, allover pattern and its warm, softened color palette. It is exactly the kind of well-worn, characterful rug that grounds a room with instant history, bringing pattern and warmth without ever feeling too precious to actually live with.
Styling Inspiration
Layer this rug in a living room, dining room, or bedroom, where its faded reds and navy accents can anchor a mix of vintage and contemporary furnishings. Pair it with warm woods, brass accents, and soft neutral upholstery to let its pattern and patina take center stage. Rotate periodically to even out wear from foot traffic and sunlight, and spot clean only, with professional cleaning recommended for deeper cleans.
